Animan Species Notes

DNA Vulpus - Sly, quick-witted, engaging and personable, these wily Animans with their bright eyes and multi-hued fur fit well into entertainment. Most were bred from the stock of the common red fox, but the addition of the genes from swifts, arctics, kits, and grays, as well as a pinch of fennec produced the gorgeous colors of the current Animus Sapiens Vulpus breed. Usually thin, excepting the arctic races who bear quite a it more muscle and fat mass; average adult female height 5'4", male 5'7". High metabolism with a natural desire to hunt birds and small animals, although most prefer food that comes to them already packaged and cooked.
DNA Ursidae - This now extinct race was originally created to be warriors and defenders, but were far too aggressive and prone to attacking other Animan, killing several. The number of docile ones did not outweigh the unstable ones, and their project was terminated.
DNA Lupus - These large wolf-crosses were among the geneticists crowning achievements. Bred as guards, soldiers, as well as for hunting companions and animals control, they were placed in areas where wolves either existed or were being reintroduced to try and prevent possible conflicts with farmers. They were able to communicate quite effectively to the packs the dangers of straying onto human lands, allowing the animals to return to many parts of Europe where they wouldn't have been able to before. It also made very clear that many problems were being caused by packs of feral dogs. Lupus Animans are credited with saving wolves from extinction. Usually large and muscular, with a low metabolism, the biggest being the Fenrir strain from northern Europe, average height of an adult female is 5'9", male 6'2".
DNA Mustelidae - At the time the Animan species was being created, ferrets and other weasels were among the most popular of pets. Bred as entertainers in circuses, and as athletes, these highly intelligent creatures found a niche in the military as spies due to that same agility and a talent for breaking and entering. Extremely high metabolism keeps these small creatures active. Average height for an adult female is 5'2", and a male 5'6". Low hunting instinct, but they still maintain the desire to hoard and collect, as well as to play tricks.
DNA Canidae - Several breeds of dogs were engineered up into Animus. Few small breeds took without massive recombining, and that in itself cause genetic defects, many fatal. The only current surviving pure breeds are the Doberman, Collie, German Shepherd, Malamute, Afghan Hound, and oddly enough, the Dingo. This does not include those whose aspects have been preserved within the Myriad species. Heights and weights vary wildly amongst them, and yet with only six remaining species, they share the majority of the population with the Felidae, who edge them out just slightly.
DNA Felidae - Cats were among the very first engineered from the new technology. Everything from housecats to majestic tigers was bred. In China, tigers became popular temple guards, and more than a few became priests. In Africa, the great cats became guardians of herds and protectors of the people, much as the wolves did for the north. The smaller, more elegant Caracal and Serval became companions to kings and the rich, enjoying the luxuries of the oil sheiks. In America, the only species to become popular were the puma, the housecat, and a cross of the bobcat and lynx. Felidae Animus range from tiny 5-foot tall females, to towering 6-foot tall ones.
DNA Myriadae - The Myriad are neither cat, dog, nor fox, but a bizarre mix of them. They were the most popular companions of all among the rich because they were usually custom made. A rich couple would donate their DNA to generate the creature they wanted. It was not unusual to see a greyhound-myriad with the spots of a leopard. The one thing all Myriad had in common was that they all contained lupine DNA. The scientists believed it would give them the sense of family orientation and loyalty that might be canceled out by the regular of the canines that they were most commonly bred from. They were also able to freely breed in between Myriad subraces, producing both beautiful and frighteningly odd variations. In Japan, the Akita Inu was the most popular variation. In Spain and Italy, the sighthounds were pampered as Olympians, prized for their speed and agility on a track. The greyhound was bred together with the saluki and the whippet to produce a breed that became known as the Italian greyhound, but they contained no DNA from the actual dog breed. In Britain, the Irish Wolfhound was the most popular cross. Among the most popular add-ons to the Myriad breed were feline coat patterns and eye colors, as well as claws and long, brushy-tails. Myriad were the showhorses of the Animus species, and were required to do little more than lie around all day and look pretty or strut down a runway. Usually adopted as newborns, they were more often than not raised as children by rich couples who wanted kids, and yet didn't. As varying in height and activity as a species can be, creatures tend to be more like patchwork plushies than Frankenstein's monsters.
